Today we talk about Biodynamic wines, what they are, how to distinguish them, what are the differences between the other types of agriculture.

What is Biodynamic agriculture?

In the past, before starting the activities in the vineyard and in the cellar, farmers always checked the movement of the moon and planets to find the best moment to intervene. It is not a chiromancy, neither magic, nor science fiction, nor even popular belief of saints or charlatans, but a real discipline linked to astronomy that regulates the cycle of life. The lunar calendar in fact suggests the best days for agricultural practices such as pruning, planting and harvesting.

The first time we heard of biodynamic agriculture dates back to the very distant 1924 by the scholar of science, philosophy, mathematics, physics, medicine, pedagogy and above all anthroposophy: Rudolf Steiner.

One year after his death, after touring the world as a lecturer, he was called by a group of landowners from East Germany to intervene with his broad knowledge of agriculture. They are the first signs of the industrial process to the detriment of nature to worry the landowners, who already begin to register with concern what then became a reality of our days: a heavy abuse of nature and its rapid transformation into destruction.

Steiner believes in cooperation between soil, water, sun, animals, plants, where every living being is part of a great cosmos. Even the farm is: a real closed-cycle living organism, completely integrated into a larger cosmic living organism.

He said: it is not possible to study a living being in itself, each organism is part of a cycle, and each cycle is part of the great cosmic cycle.
Biodynamic agriculture starts from the foundation that in order to cultivate the land it is necessary to set life in motion (dynamic of the bio), without anything backfiring man and the environment, both in the present and in the future.

1. How to apply biodynamics?

We will try to outline the basic principles, but aware of the fact that biodynamics can not be summarized in a few lines. The speech is very broad, cosmic precisely, as deep as the link between man and nature.

Every activity such as sowing, transplanting, pruning, etc. it is part of the cosmos, therefore it is necessary to consider the position of the stars and the lunar phases that make the various activities more or less propitious.

Primary in biodynamics, in addition to recovering traditional / craft practices such as green manure and fallow, biodynamic agriculture is based on a series of natural preparations, which act with the same principle of homeopathy, which act as nourishment and protection both for the soil and for the plant itself.

2. Which are the principles of Biodynamic agricolture?

 

  1. The first objective is the care of the soil and its enrichment in a natural way, therefore the exact opposite of the impoverishment given by chemical agents.
  2. The second one is to obtain healthy fruits, which act and react naturally to external agents, preserving all the nutrients that the soil has given them.
  3. Last but not least, the knowledge and conscience of the farmer, responsible and ethical of the care of the land, as if his educator were to grow up healthy and strong.



3. How to choose a biodynamic wine?

For years, there have been several certifications attesting that a wine is biodynamic or not, but it is not just a matter of certification. It is here that the work of wine shops or those who select wines and cellars and verify the truthfulness of the information. How? They visit the cellars, it is always the litmus test of many topics.

In fact, many companies in recent years, both organic and biodynamic, are not very likely to compromise the certification bodies require and in some way, the same certificate is a limitation to their ethics. Let's try to explain better this "irreverent" statement: there are those who have needs for market or other issues, to obtain certification and show the certification body logo on the label, there are also those who have no certification but a great ethics that it has chosen a biodynamic or organic agriculture regardless of the logo on the label.

So how can we trust those who say they are biodynamic?
