Markus Scholtes

Markus Scholtes

Neumagen-Dhron is the oldest wine area in Germany: there are traces of vine cultivation dating back to Roman times.
Markus Scholtes, third generation of a family of winemakers who produce and sell their wines to local companies, has been working alongside his father ever since he was very young. From 2008 to 2010, Markus completed an apprenticeship at the St. Urbans-Hof winery, learning from master Niki Weis.
Later he studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Geisenheim, after finishing his studies, he directed the Dr. Fisher winery in Ockfen (from 2013 to 2014) owned by Niki Weis and Martin Foradori Hofstätter.
After spending six months traveling around the world, he returned to Germany to head up Markus Molitor's winery for two years. Alongside his work as a consultant at the DLR Mosel, an association for the protection and development of agriculture, Markus Scholtes began producing Riesling on his own in his father's cellar, selecting the best quality grapes in the family vineyards. Currently it produces five labels but in very limited quantities, around 1200 bottles in all. Cultivation takes place in a biological regime (certification will shortly arrive) on steep slopes, characterized by a soil rich in slate that gives Markus wines the distinctive traits of a high quality Riesling: great freshness and minerality combined with a moderate alcohol content .
