Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux Clos Rougeard 2014

The vineyard of the legendary Les Poyeux extends for just three hectares, but has succeeded in making the name of the company indelible in the world of wine. A 50-year-old Cabernet Franc vineyard that the Focault Brothers, with the foresight that made them mythological, have always vinified separately, leaving the wine to mature in barrique.

All the nobility of the Loire, the cradle of French viticulture, therefore finds itself in this discreet estate of the Foucault family, located in the village of Chacé, between Tours and Angers. The great strength of this estate of just 10 hectares is that it has never followed the trend and so with clayey-limestone soils that have never known the slightest drop of herbicide or the slightest chemical fertilizer, the wines of Clos Rougeard express a minerality and a rare complexity, giving real meaning to the concept of terroir. Yields have always been less than 40 hectoliters per hectare, or about 6 clusters per foot of vineyard. The other specificity of Clos Rougeard is that it has perpetuated the tradition of the localities, or of the "climat". Each of these individual terroirs gives a unique and particular wine that is grown separately, such as this Cabernet franc in purity.
