The Rheinhessen wine region extends into a large triangle on the left bank of the river Rhine between Bingen and Mainz north and south up to Worms. It is one of the most dry and mild in Germany, with 1,500 hours of sunshine a year and an average annual rainfall of just 500 mm.
With its 26,000 hectares (expanding) of vineyards, it is the largest wine region of Germany, which employs more than 6,000 growers, for an annual production of more than 2.5 million hectoliters of wine by approximately 120 million screws. It is also, however, one of the most ancient and most noble tradition of Germany. The first traces of the vine "Rüssling" (Riesling), dating back to 1402 were found just in Rheinhessen, near Worms.
This is an area of great potential, I realized the Romans; the geographical location, topography, protection of the mountain range of the Donnersberg, the proximity to the Rhine, the land of rocks and fertile soil make it predestined for the production of high quality wines.
Until the First World War, the Rheinhessen was in fact known for its great wines, but following the decay caused by the war, many producers preferred to work on the quantity, rather than quality.
Nowadays the "land of a thousand hills", as it is called the Rheinhessen, is recovering its ancient splendor thanks to some of the best German winemakers, producing Rieslings of the highest quality wines that can challenge the excellence world.
