From vineyards located around Caldaro and Termeno (BZ), Christoph Unterhofer chooses to process pure Schiava grapes from ancient vines.

Schiava is a grape variety with very distant origins, and while it is said to be so called because of its growth close to supports that made it precisely "slave, bound", on the other hands this name is said to derive from its "Slavic" origins.

Today it is a widely planted grape variety in Trentino, South Tyrol, Veneto and Lombardy. It joins numerous appellations, including the Weinberg Dolomiten IGP, to which this Reyter's version belongs.

Following spontaneous fermentation in steel containers, malolactic fermentation and subsequent aging take place in 500l wooden barrels. The aging period is 18 months.
No clarification or filtration are involved.

Three Senses

The version of Schiava created by Christoph Unterhofer, which has a deep red color in the glass, releases on the nose and in the mouth fruity scents, especially of red fruits. Notes of spices and dried fruits, especially almond are also evident.
Also striking is the pleasant lightness of this wine, perfectly balanced with its acidity.

Reyter - Unterhofer Christoph - Bolzano

Cantina Reyter Unterhofer Christoph

The Reyter farm, located in Gries, one of the districts of Bolzano, was founded in 1988 with very few hectares of Lagrein vines that are still used today. Currently Christoph and Rosy run the 4-hectare farm. In addition to the vines, their fruit production is also important. The terrain in which the farm is located is perfect for viticulture. The soil is alluvial, porphyry and moraine due to the proximity of the Talvera and Isarco rivers. Also the climate is well suited with warm summers, mild winters and more than 300 days of sunshine per year.

The choice to sow various types of grasses and cereals constitutes a compensatory symbiosis to the vines, which establish a relationship of exchange of mineral salts and useful substances with these species. Cultivation and tillage are based on certified ecological principles. It is nature that sets the pace, imparting a new special character to the wines each year. The varieties grown are those most traditional in the area, namely Lagrein and Schiava. It is also used a variety called Muscarius from Piwi, resilient, vineyards.
