Orange by Els Jelipins is the result of an assemblage of Summoll and Montonega, two ancient native varieties of penedes. The vineyard grows on soils that have alluvial traces with slate and granite. The wine undergoes the least possible intervention (indigenous yeasts, SO2 only to bottling). The fermentation temperature is established naturally and is normally low. While the Summoll is pressed directly, the Macera Mutton for about three months on the skins. The maturation takes place all in steel and the two masses are assembled together only before bottling. The winemaking process is slow and careful respecting life cycles.

Els Jelipins

els jelipins

In El Penedès, beyond the vineyards and the overflowing cellars of Cava, there is a dirt road that leads to the small town of Font-rubí. If you look closely, at the top of the hill you can see Glòria Garriga's dream, which began many years ago. Glòria knew from childhood that she would live on that hill in close contact with the earth, the sky and all the extraordinary creatures that are in the middle. Years later, the dream came true in Els Jelipins. In 2001, after observing how modern winemaking techniques would not have produced any results, Els Jelipins began a search that brought Glòria and her daughter Berta to El Penedès Superior. The first two vintages (2003 and 2004) were made in the barn of Glòria's father. It is since then that together they started building their "dream house" and today they finally own their cellar. They produce 2300 bottles of red per year and since 2014 around 200 bottles of white. They use several hilly vineyards selected by some growers. Each vineyard is chosen for its position, for the climate, the vine, the age of the vines and the type of soil. As the fruit ripens, they select only a part of the harvest, what they believe to be the best in terms of wine, and harvest, always and only by hand, in different sessions. All Els Jelipins wines ferment with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, they are not clarified or filtered. During fermentation the must is always in contact with oxygen, both oval amphoras and large barrels are used for aging. Each bottle is hand-painted to show Els Jelipins' message. Although the contents of the bottles change every year, the substance of the whole project, which is what Gloria and Berta want to convey, always remains the same.
