Vin Tonique Mariani is a tonic wine, remake of the famous tonic made of a mix of Bordeaux wine and coca leaves from Peru, invented in the mid-1800s by the pharmacist Angelo Mariani. Emile Zola and the Russian Tsar decreed his success in the most powerful classes of the time. A development phase which was followed by an almost inexorable decline due to prohibition in the use of coca.

The original recipe included: white wine, in which the coca leaves were infused for about 20 days, together with the cola berries, finally the fortification with the addition of alcohol. Since 2017 Christophe, Angelo's great-grandson, has brought to light this splendid aperitif product, which in the current production starts from Vermentinu wine from Corsica, at about 12-12.5% vol. to which coca leaf distillate and cola berry extract are added. The two salient steps of infusion and fortification are thus replaced by a single processing phase which guarantees the same aromatic contribution but the total legality of the product, given that during distillation the psychotropic component of coca loses its properties.

Maison Coca Mariani

maison mariani

Paris 1863, Angelo Mariani founded the Maison that would become famous in the bourgeoisie of the time thanks to an extraordinary intuition: to macerate 60 Peruvian coca leaves with Bordeaux wine giving birth to Vin Tonique Mariani. Today Christophe, his great-grandson, has recreated Vin Mariani, thanks to the use of Corsican Vermentinu from and coca leaves deprived of the psychotropic substance, making it legal for our days.
