Grape harvest and wine rituals: predictions for the 2025 vintage

What we expect from the upcoming harvest and the 2025 wines

The harvest is not just the moment when grapes are picked: it is an ancient ritual, marked by time and nature, which each year brings with it expectations, hopes and new challenges.

In 2025, more than ever, the harvest tells a story of resilience, climate change and how winemakers have learned to adapt in order to preserve the quality and identity of their wines.

In this article, we explore what this vintage is expected to be like, which factors have had the greatest impact and how our flagship wine (Verdicchio) reflects the heart of this season.

What does harvesting mean today?

While harvesting used to be dictated solely by farmers' experience and the calendar, today it is a delicate balance between tradition, science and, above all, knowledge.

Constant monitoring, ripeness analysis and observation of the vineyards help producers choose the perfect moment for harvesting — because a few days more or less can radically change the profile of a wine.

Fortunately, there are no longer any protocols, as each vintage is different from the previous ones, and winemakers are increasingly meticulous and knowledgeable in their care and objectives.

If once (until not so long ago) it was said that “grandparents did it this way”, now there are more and more choices to be made and the variables make the work of the true winemaker really complicated.

But the result is exclusive: the true professional is capable (he doesn't sleep at night for months, eh) of balancing and leveraging these increasingly unpredictable changes in nature.

Vintage 2025: first impressions and expectations

We are in the final stages and while we write comfortably on our keyboards, many are already harvesting or at least planning to start.

The 2025 vintage is shaping up to be a happy and unexpectedly regular one. It already has several elements in its favour for the harvest of healthy grapes.

Spring saw irregular temperatures, with heavy rainfall alternating with unusually hot days.

Summer... we couldn't remember (at least in the Marche region) such a clean season, with clear blue skies, optimal temperatures, warm during the day and cool at night, much less torrid than in 2023 and 2024, with just a few initial heat peaks but overall regular and absolutely pleasant.

September is expected to be dry and stable, ideal conditions for concentrating aromas and sugars.

The result? We could have more taut and fresh whites, with well-integrated acidity, and complex reds, thanks to slower and more gradual ripening.

The role of climate change

Even though we are in a very positive 2025, we still have to deal with climate change, which unfortunately is no longer a possibility but a reality that winegrowers experience every day.

• Early or late harvests compared to the historical average.

• Grapes that develop sugars more quickly, with risks of imbalance between alcohol and acidity.

• Extreme events such as sudden hailstorms or periods of drought.

Yet these challenges also give rise to new opportunities: unusual grape varieties in new territories, more sustainable agronomic techniques, natural approaches that respect the rhythm of the vine.

The rituals that remain

Despite everything, changes, challenges, opportunities and difficulties, the grape harvest always retains a magic that remains unchanged over time:

the manual harvest at dawn to preserve freshness, the songs and laughter among the rows of vines, the first must fermenting and releasing aromas that envelop the cellar, friendships and perhaps new loves among the rows, and the convivial dinners that always end in revelry to celebrate the noble work of the land and enjoy it after the physical exertion.

These gestures, handed down from generation to generation, are the soul of our selection: behind every bottle there is a story of hands, time, nature, minds and hearts that never stop thinking and listening.

The 2025 harvest: what to expect from Verdicchio

This year, the enthusiasm of winemakers is finally sky high.

After the 2019 harvest, which produced a more flavourful, vibrant and tasty Verdicchio, we had to “settle” for five modest vintages.

The Verdicchio wines drunk and tasted in recent years have shown shortcomings in terms of balance and complexity, which only the care and attention of the winemakers have been able to compensate for and balance out.

The difficulties that arose, due to crazy weather, were managed as best as possible, facing challenges such as the attack of Peronospora in 2023, which had never occurred before.

In these five years, we have never “shouted” about great wine, and few labels have ended up in our cellars, but if the stars align, this 2025 season could change the rule.

There is no presence of fungi or bacteria on the plant or on the bunches, the vigour and richness of the bunches are very high, and the analytical values of acidity and malic acid are high.

We are looking at memorable vintages such as 2010 and 2013 throughout the Verdicchio area.

We look forward to the work of the winemakers with confidence!

Conclusion

The 2025 harvest will be remembered as a season of renewed balance, after years of extreme weather conditions.

Each glass will tell the story of how wine can adapt, transform and, above all, continue to inspire emotion.

Because the harvest is not just about gathering grapes: it is an act of love for the land.
